The Anglican Diocese of Thika was created on July 1, 1998, from the larger dioceses of Mt. Kenya Central and South respectively.

The diocese, headquartered at the St. Andrew’s Pro-Cathedral compound, started with 3 Archdeaconries, 24 parishes and 26 clergy serving a population of 9,488 Christians. By 2004 tremendous growth had been registered with the diocese having 4 Archdeaconries, 54 parishes, and 65 clergy serving a population of 20,900 Christians. In addition, the diocese has 5 missionary priests who are serving in recently established mission parishes in USA. This new development is as a result of the current crisis on human sexuality in the Episcopal Church of America.

The Diocese falls within the Administrative boundary of Thika District in Central Province of the Republic of Kenya. This district has a population of close to one million people, and covers approximately 1960 sq. km. Thika is a diocese with many different faces ranging from its typography, climate, soils and economic occupation. Its zone borders the Aberdare Ranges, and has a cool climate with rich volcanic soils. Coffee, tea, pineapples and dairy farming are the main agricultural activities.

The Lower zone is however marginal land bordering the Yatta Plateau with low rainfall ranging between 500 – 1000 mm. Thika forms part of the newly opened settlement schemes with land holdings measuring between two and five acres. The main occupation here is subsistence farming.

ACK Thika Diocese will be celebrating 10 Great years of Ministry On 31^st Jan. 2009. Having been established on 1^st July 1998, the first Bishop, The RT. Rev Dr. Gideon Githiga was consecrated on 31^st January 1999 hence the celebrations.  On the said date, we have organized for a Charity walk as part of our fundraising efforts in support of our holistic Ministry especially to the under- privileged members of our communities with both spiritual and material needs.

We envision accelerating ministry to the following target groups: Orphans and vulnerable children, unemployed youth, PWA’s {People Living with AIDS} the elderly care-givers, poverty and hunger stricken communities within our diocese, we also intend to evangelize the unreached with the gospel. Our target is to raise Shs. 5 million
